Anyone that has a reservation or interested in the F-150 Lightning knows that Ford is going to offer two different battery sizes, a standard-range battery and an extended-range battery. We obviously know which one will deliver more of a driving range. The report came out from Ford on a livestreamed discussing the details of the two batteries.

So, the standard range battery, which Ford is claiming will deliver 230 miles of driving range, will have 98kWh of usable capacity. The upgraded battery option (Ford saying has 300 miles of drive range), Ford Co. is claiming that it will have use of a massive 131 kWh of usable capacity. All this information is all from early figures and can change (up or down).

In comparison to other EV's, Tesla's Model S Sedan has a 100-kWh battery and GMC's new Hummer EV truck gets up to 200 kWh (which weighs around 9000 lbs., so it can only deliver around 329 of drive range). This puts the upgraded battery Lightning right in between these 2 competitors at the 300 mile range. The Rivian's R1T pickup has a battery range of 314 miles and offers a 135 kWh battery, but plans to add a 180 kWh battery pack that will be good for over 400 miles.

In the meantime, if you're considering ordering a Lightning, keep in mind that there are 200,000 people in front of you in line, and that the standard-range battery pack is standard on the work-truck Lightning Pro, midgrade XLT, and fancier Lariat trims; the extended range battery pack is optional on the XLT and Lariat and standard on the range-topping Platinum spec.
